Ostia is a Roman city, the port of the city of Rome at the mouth of the river Tiber.
First Roman colony founded in the seventh century BC by King Anco Marzio in Rome, according to the traditional account, particularly developed in the imperial period as a commercial center and port, closely related all'annona (supply of grain to the capital).
It remained the residential and administrative center after the construction of the harbours of Claudius and Trajan, but declined rapidly in late antiquity, replaced by the port city of Porto. It was abandoned in the early Middle Ages.
The ruins of the city were dug from the beginning of the nineteenth century. They have been preserved, along with the public monuments, numerous dwelling houses and production facilities, making it an important record of ancient everyday life.
